Basic Mechanical Drawing and Technical Design
(Required ; Grade 7; 2 periods /week, 1 semester)

This course introduces students to manual and computer-aided drafting techniques used to produce mechanical drawings. Both orthographic and isometric drawings are covered. The students will first learn how to read, visualize, interpret, and draw various line types and line weights. Dimensioning and accurate measurement will be employed to produce quality mechanical drawings. Students will then advance to produce mechanical drawings on the computer. The students will apply the process of design to the production of a CO2 race car. The students will be introduced to basic hand tools and a limited number of power tools on this project. This unit culminates in time trials to test the CO2 race cars. The students will study basic architectural drawing, learning about plot plans, basic house styles, kitchen styles, elevations, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and heating and ventilations systems. They will draw a basic floor plan and create a simple model of their work.
